Tattoo Bylaw Under Review

May 23, 2012

Some local tattoo artists are not too pleased with bylaw C-1064, which handles licensing for tattoo artists and their place of business. The bylaw requires all artists to supply a blood test and a criminal record check. Chris Manuel with Enforcement Services says when the bylaw came into place its main focus was safety. The bylaw is being reviewed and Manuel says new guidelines should be in place by Fall. The City was approached by local tattoo artists whose main concerns were the required blood work and criminal record check that can take up to six weeks to process. For the time being, the city has imposed temporary permits that allow artists to work while they wait for their application to go through.
