ASIRT investigating after man died while in police custody near Goodfare
Feb 15, 2017
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the death of a young man west of Grande Prairie.
On Sunday, Beaverlodge RCMP were called to a rural residence near Goodfare for a possible break and enter.
Officers entered the home and found a man laying on a couch who then stood up and grabbed a nearby shotgun.
Mounties immediately got out of the home, then surrounded it and waited for back up.
Once officers were able to get back into the residence they found the body of the 20-year-old male.
ASIRT is investigating because it “occurred while contained in a residence under the custody and control of police officers, is considered to be an in-custody death, triggering the application of Section 46.1 of the Police Act. ASIRT’s investigation will focus on the circumstances surrounding the death of the man in the residence.”
While the investigation is ongoing, officials says it appears “no shots were fired at any time by members of the RCMP.”
